Dance Dance Revolution 5th Mix is in the spotlight for this PSIO prototype test. I’ve got the game loading on hardware 1.1 with software 1.1A, and now I get to find out whether I can actually play it. Any takers to challenge me at the arcades? Pretty sure I’d end up kicking you in the head, especially if I can’t coordinate four buttons with my left hand!

The game boots, which is a good start, but the audio is a little inconsistent. Some sections have sound while others are suspiciously quiet, including places where I’d normally expect to hear music. That’s not ideal for a dancing game!

I also had some trouble switching into the actual game mode through the RGB output. I was getting a blank screen, so I tried composite instead. That gave me a picture, although in black and white on this setup. At least it’s a way to continue the test, even if I have to sacrifice a bit of colour.

Then I actually tried playing. Good grief, there are a lot of arrows! I’m using an ordinary controller rather than a dance mat, and it turns out I’m not particularly talented at pressing the right buttons quickly enough. I even managed a 17-combo at one point, which felt like a major achievement.

There’s still work to be done on the prototype’s game compatibility and audio, but it’s encouraging to see this much of Dance Dance Revolution running. Please remember these results apply to PSIO hardware 1.1 and software 1.1A, not the eventual finished device.

You can hit up ps-io.com if you have any questions, since I’m but a mere tester. I don’t understand all the technology behind this wonderful invention!
