A way around the transformer issue(s) might be to try running off C cell batteries or to run a DC-DC stepdown through the battery terminals. That would only be worth attempting after identifying the battery supply voltage, polarity and the internal rails it feeds. The battery input cannot automatically be assumed to be electrically equivalent to every transformer secondary inside the unit.
