Part 14 - Testing the Waters
Archive note: This page documents the January 2016 Tor v2 onion-service setup. Read the compatibility and security warning in Part 1 before using these commands on a current system.
Time to get some content onto the web server. In this setup I could use the Samba share configured earlier or create files directly from the terminal. Type anything you want into Notepad, TextEdit, Nano or another text editor, save it as index.html and place it in the website directory.
To see the onion address generated for this historical service:
sudo cat /var/lib/tor/website1/hostname
The next step was to open that address in Tor Browser and look for the test page. The address generated by this 2016 setup was a v2 onion address; those no longer work on the modern Tor network.

That’s all there is! I hope this helped you out! :)
This documents the v2 onion-service setup I used in 2016. The address format and several parts of the software stack are obsolete now, so head back to Part 1 for the archive warning and complete historical series.
