Something has gone horribly wrong with the Western Technologies Sega Development Card. Could be a poor connection to the Mega Drive, perhaps an issue with transferring the game from the PC, or something else entirely. Whatever the cause, Sonic the Hedgehog is having a rather interesting day!
Each time I tried running the game, something different seemed to happen. We had graphical corruption, some particularly entertaining musical glitches and the occasional illegal instruction error. Not exactly the sort of results you’d want from a development kit, but I was having a wonderful time watching it all unfold.
At one point, Sonic appeared to be underwater in Green Hill Zone. That was a new one! Another attempt produced what looked like two Sonics on the screen. I was beginning to think this was more entertaining than circuit bending.
The development software was apparently an early alpha or beta version, so that may have played a part. Then again, a bad connection or something going wrong during the transfer could produce all sorts of strange behaviour. I hadn’t established the cause.
So enjoy ten minutes of Sonic doing things that Sonic was probably never intended to do. Be sure to listen to the audio glitches as well. Some of them are absolutely ridiculous!
