Flicky! Ohhh that little cicada was such a survivor. Resting and laying eggs almost every day for ten days while in captivity. Sadly she succumbed to time on 8th March 2023.
When I was a kid, I called cicadas “Croaky” because I thought they sounded like they were croaking. Well, I was a kid, cut me some slack! Flicky was a female Floury Baker (Aleeta curvicosta), so Flicky seemed a much more appropriate name. Her wings were badly damaged and flying wasn’t an option, but that didn’t stop her laying eggs. I wasn’t expecting that!
I ended up reading quite a bit about keeping branches alive, cicadas feeding on xylem sap, and what happens to their eggs once they hatch. I knew the species already, but there’s still a great deal I don’t know about what goes on once the singing stops and the season ends.
Flicky’s Ten Days
- Day 1, 27th February 2023
- Day 2, 28th February 2023
- Day 3, 1st March 2023
- Day 4, 2nd March 2023
- Day 5, 3rd March 2023
- Day 6, 4th March 2023
- Day 7, 5th March 2023
- Day 8, 6th March 2023
- Day 9, 7th March 2023
- Day 10, 8th March 2023
Flicky lives on through her children. My next steps were doing the best I could to make sure her young hatched and could then be released back into the wild! 🥲
