Meet Stumpie! One of the delicate skinks living in my garden, and a regular visitor around the pot plants. I recorded this little encounter back in January, when Stumpie was recovering from losing part of their tail.

I suspect my earlier lawn mowing adventures might have been involved, although I can’t be certain. The good news is that the tail was growing back quite nicely!

I’ve become rather reluctant to mow the lawn since moving here. Apart from removing the insects that the lizards eat, there’s always the possibility of accidentally injuring someone hiding amongst the grass. I’ve already had a couple of rather upsetting experiences with that, so I’d much rather leave the garden a little overgrown.

On this particular occasion I found Stumpie before mowing and brought them inside temporarily to keep them out of harm’s way. Stumpie always seems to have a rather surprised expression, as though wondering what on Earth is going on.

There are plenty of other skinks living around the garden too, including some with much more pronounced pale stripes. I’ve also spotted quite a few youngsters appearing amongst the plants, so there’s certainly no shortage of little lizards wandering about.

Once I’d finished mowing, I returned Stumpie to the garden. Getting a tiny skink to cooperate isn’t particularly easy, but we managed it!

I’d much rather have a garden full of lizards, insects and other little creatures than a perfectly manicured lawn. Besides, watching these little fellows go about their business is far more entertaining than mowing grass.
