Well, Google has decided it’s time to send Picasa off into retirement. Fantastic! Just when I had everything nicely organised, it’s time to find somewhere else to dump all my photographs.
The Picasa desktop application is losing support this month, with changes to the web albums coming in May. Google wants everyone moving over to Google Photos instead, which is all well and good, but I’m not entirely convinced it’s the way I want my photo gallery to work.
I’ve been looking through a few alternatives and Flickr seems to be the best fit moving forward. For the sake of scattering my pictures absolutely everywhere, I’ve also stuck them up on Facebook. Why have one copy of everything floating around the internet when you can have several?
I’ll leave the old Picasa albums up for as long as they remain available. Who knows, perhaps everything will eventually merge into my Google+ page too. Wouldn’t that be magnificent? 🙃
Hopefully the new arrangement will make it easier to browse all the old hardware photographs, repairs and assorted nonsense I’ve collected over the years. There are quite a few of them now, and I don’t particularly fancy sorting through everything again!
Update 7th May 2022: The Flickr account has been closed, and I planned to move the photo archive to the site’s own Photo Gallery. That destination currently shows a placeholder; the gallery has not been restored there.
