Big Fish is back! On the 24th October 2019, we’ve got another look at Trevor, our Australian eel-tailed catfish (Tandanus tandanus). What a fish! Trevor had a rather wonderful habit of getting my attention, and I was more than happy to return the favour with the camera. There’s something rather endearing about a catfish that seems just as interested in what’s happening outside the aquarium as what’s going on inside it.
The next day, Big Fish is hiding! Well, that’s what we’re looking for, anyway. One of the entertaining things about keeping catfish is discovering that a fish can be somewhere inside an aquarium while apparently being nowhere in particular.
About one month later, on the 20th November 2019, we’ve got an extended helping of Big Fish! Sometimes a longer recording is the best way to appreciate these animals without rushing through everything. There’s no shortage of things to watch when you’ve got a friendly, curious catfish going about the day.
There was a serious side to all this too. Trevor was living in a 75-litre AquaStyle 510 aquarium, and keeping up with water conditions was becoming increasingly important as Big Fish grew. My notes from the 11th November 2019 recorded 0.25 ppm ammonium (NH4+), zero nitrite and nitrate between 40 and 80 ppm.
By the 8th December 2019, we’re back to watching Trevor swimming around. I could spend ages observing Big Fish! The way an eel-tailed catfish moves through the water is fascinating, and Trevor was certainly a character worth keeping an eye on. There’s a reason I kept coming back with the camera.
And on the 16th December 2019, it’s time for Big Fish swim training! Swim training? For a fish? I don’t recall issuing any swimming certificates, but I suspect Trevor would have passed with flying colours. For Trevor’s earlier adventures and the bigger story behind the aquarium, have a look at Big Fish (Trevor) the Eel-tailed Catfish!.
Fish rock!
