I spent some time playing Mega Man 4 on the Nintendo Entertainment System, and I must say I was rather impressed by how good it looked. We’re still talking about an 8-bit console here, but the colours and artwork are so nice you’d almost think it was something a little newer.

The music was fantastic too! I particularly enjoyed the Skull Man stage, partly because it was one of the few levels I actually managed to get through without too much trouble.

Unfortunately, the rest of the game wasn’t nearly as cooperative. Some of those stages were incredibly difficult, although there’s always the possibility that I’m simply terrible at playing Mega Man. That seemed increasingly likely the longer I went on!

Still, there was plenty to enjoy. Capcom certainly knew how to get some impressive graphics and music out of the NES by this point, and Mega Man 4 is a lovely example of what the system could do.

I nearly forgot to give the game a score, which would have been a rather unfortunate outcome for a game review. Eventually I settled on 6.3. Anything above five is pretty good, apparently, so that’s a solid result according to whatever scoring system I was using that week!

I’d also been playing far too much Fallout around this time. Perhaps getting to level 81 had something to do with my inability to play anything else properly.

Anyway, Mega Man 4. Give it a go. McRetro says so!
