Kirby’s Adventure might just be one of the nicest-looking games I’ve seen on the Nintendo Entertainment System. Released towards the end of the NES era in 1993, it really shows what developers could do once they’d had a few years to get comfortable with the hardware.

Just look at the graphics! Beautiful green hills, colourful skies and all these wonderful little characters wandering around. Kirby can even turn into a flamethrower after swallowing the right enemy.

I had a lovely time exploring the various little diversions too, including one where you grab a Kirby with a mechanical claw to win extra lives. I managed to pick up two lives from one successful grab!

The music was another highlight. In fact, I couldn’t think of anything particularly bad to say about the soundtrack, so I awarded it a full three out of three. That’s three points on whatever musical scoring system I’d invented that day.

Gameplay was just as enjoyable, although I occasionally managed to confuse the A and B buttons. I also had some trouble working out which enemies I needed to swallow to gain particular abilities. On one occasion I managed to defeat the very enemy I was trying to copy. Whoops!

The bosses were great fun too, even when they were busy wiping the floor with me. There really wasn’t much I disliked about the game.

So I gave Kirby’s Adventure a rather impressive 8.7. That probably puts it near the top of my little review rankings, assuming I ever work out how those rankings are supposed to function.

Beautiful game. Beautiful music. What more could you want?
