Working out which branches were suitable for Flicky was another question entirely. I’d been working my way through leaf guides, elm, birch and anything else that might help, but none of it gave me enough to identify the tree with confidence. Not much point in pretending I knew what I was looking at when I was trying to find something she could feed from.

Flicky wasn’t always making the job particularly easy either. At one point she seemed unwilling to turn around at the end of a branch, and I found myself asking, “Do you have to be so difficult?” Apparently getting a cicada to cooperate with my plans was going to be another challenge entirely.
