Yikes! Listen to that motor spin and click.

The CD mechanism is clearly not behaving properly. The spindle runs unusually fast while the optical assembly repeatedly moves up, down and back and forth.

In the video the disc even appeared to be spinning in the wrong direction, although from the recording alone I cannot establish that the spindle motor was genuinely being driven backwards. Either way, something in the deck control or mechanism was very unhappy.

This is the same white Japanese Saturn that had just arrived with the noisy drive assembly.

Time to work out what is actually wrong with it.
