What on Earth are these things? I found a collection of strange little bugs making a meal of the leaves on a privacy hedge. I had absolutely no idea what they were at the time, but they turned out to be bagworms of some description.
Unfortunately, they were doing a rather impressive job of stripping the hedge of its leaves. Not particularly useful when the whole point of a privacy hedge is to provide some privacy! Without its leaves, it wasn’t much use to the owners.
The hedge was eventually treated with bifenthrin pesticide. The bagworms were killed and the hedge was saved, but the consequences were absolutely horrible.
After the spraying, I started finding lizards twitching and stumbling around. Some were badly injured, while others died. Seeing those poor little fellows suffering firsthand was enough to convince me that we’d never use pesticide in the garden again.
I’d rather lose a few leaves than watch another lizard go through that.
I later put together another article and video showing what happened to the lizards. Not a particularly pleasant experience, but something I thought was important to share.
